Teenage Cancer Trust today welcomes the Government’s response to Lord O’Shaughnessy’s review into commercial clinical trials in the UK, announcing a plan for implementing a series of recommendations to improve the landscape for delivering industry-sponsored clinical trials. But the charity says that it’s vital that the voices and experiences of young people are accounted for as the recommendations are developed and put into action.
Dr Louise Soanes, Chief Nurse, Teenage Cancer Trust, said: “No young person with cancer should miss out on the opportunity to take part in a clinical trial only because of their age. Lack of access impacts survival rates and slows progress in the development of better and kinder treatments for younger people.
“Increasing the number of clinical trials could improve the situation, but young people with cancer face additional barriers to taking part that must be addressed.
“These include a lack of age-appropriate information about trials, and the fact that taking part often involves travelling far from home, causing huge disruption to their lives.
“It is vital that the voices and experiences of young people are accounted for as the O’Shaughnessy recommendations are developed and put into action, and Teenage Cancer Trust welcomes any opportunity to work with the Government and the NHS to ensure this happens.”
